For the first time in an official document, 'Gulf of America' is used instead of Gulf of Mexico: Trump had said they would change the name

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis used the term 'Gulf of America' instead of Gulf of Mexico in an executive order issued to declare a state of emergency. The order signed by DeSantis became the first official document to use the term Gulf of America.

Hours after US President Donald Trump used expressions regarding the gulf during his inauguration ceremony, DeSantis signed the executive order containing the 'Gulf of America' reference.

In the executive order declaring a state of emergency, it was written: 'A low-pressure area moving over the Gulf of America will bring widespread severe winter weather conditions to the north of Florida as of January 21, 2025.'

Thus, for the first time in the US, a state has used the definition 'Gulf of America' instead of 'Gulf of Mexico' in line with Trump's statements.

HOW DID THE GULF OF AMERICA DEBATE BEGIN?

In a press conference held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on January 7, Trump stated that they were running 'unnecessary' deficits with both Canada and Mexico, and that he would revise economic relations and customs with both countries.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted to Trump's words on January 9, giving the following response:

'I am displaying an old map from 1607. Of course, the Gulf of Mexico is recognized as the official name by the United Nations. But why don't we call North America 'Mexican America'? It sounds nice, doesn't it? We can discuss this according to the Constitution of Apatzingán. Then let's call North America Mexican America.'

In his inauguration speech, Trump reiterated the statement: 'We will soon change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.'
