Istanbul is hosting the R4 and R4+E3 Foreign Ministers' meetings, where regional and global crisis topics will be addressed. Foreign ministers from seven countries are coming together in this format for the first time at the talks hosted by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The meetings are being attended by German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan.
At the R4+E3 meeting held at Turkey's initiative, it is expected that the Palestinian issue, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, developments related to Yemen, and the search for solutions to the Russia-Ukraine war will be discussed.
The talks are also expected to evaluate opportunities for future cooperation and coordination between the R4 and E3 countries. The diplomatic format aims to establish a basis for common contact and consultation on various crisis topics.
The first of the R4 Foreign Ministers' meetings was held in Riyadh on March 18, and the most recent meeting took place in New York on September 21 on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. The mechanism has met six times to date.
The E3 mechanism, consisting of Germany, the UK, and France, emerged in 2003 within the scope of trilateral diplomatic cooperation regarding Iran's nuclear program. Over time, the structure has become a diplomatic platform for joint initiatives on various regional and international issues.
