Former Czech Prime Minister Babis attacked with crutch during rally

Former Czech Prime Minister and founding leader of the main opposition party, Action of Dissatisfied Citizens (ANO), Andrej Babis, was attacked during a rally held for the general elections to be held in a month.

According to reports in the Czech press, Babis was attacked by someone from the crowd at around 18:00 local time during an election rally held in the village of Dobra in the Moravian-Silesian region in the east of the country. It was reported that Babis, who was attacked by the assailant with a crutch, received blows to his head and back.

It was stated that the 70-year-old politician was taken to a local hospital for examination and a brain CT scan following the attack, and no information was provided regarding the politician's health status. It was noted that the police present at the scene immediately intervened against the attacker, who is between 50 and 60 years old. In a statement made by the police, it was announced that the attacker was immediately taken into custody and an investigation into the incident was launched.

CZECH PRIME MINISTER CONDEMNED THE ATTACK

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala condemned the attack and wished main opposition leader Babis a speedy recovery. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan also condemned the attack, stating that violence brings no solutions and is unacceptable.

MAIN OPPOSITION BLAMES THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE ATTACK

The main opposition party, ANO, held the government responsible for the attack. ANO Deputy Chairman Karel Havlicek said, "This is a direct result of the hate campaign carried out by the current coalition."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in a statement on his social media account following the attack, said, "Violence has now infiltrated Czech politics, following Slovakia. Political opponents have been demonizing Andrej Babis for years. This is the result. But they will not stop him. He will continue on his path and win the elections! Get well soon, my friend."
