Former high-ranking Ukrainian official Portnov killed in Madrid

Former high-ranking Ukrainian official Portnov killed in Madrid

It has been reported that former Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Andriy Portnov was shot and killed in Madrid by an unidentified person or persons. Portnov was one of the top aides to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in the 2014 Euromaidan revolution.

According to a source close to the police investigation cited by Reuters, an unidentified gunman or gunmen shot and killed former Ukrainian official Andriy Portnov outside a school in an affluent suburb of Madrid.

Speaking to Reuters, Madrid police stated they received a report at 09:15 local time that a Ukrainian citizen had been shot outside the elite American School of Madrid, located in Pozuelo de Alarcon.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that police believe there were “two or three” attackers and that the victim had “at least three” gunshot wounds on his body.

Portnov was one of the top aides to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in the 2014 Euromaidan revolution.

Reuters noted that since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there have been numerous crimes involving high-profile Russians and Ukrainians in Spain, which has a significant population from both countries.

In November and December 2022, six letter bombs were sent to high-profile targets in Spain, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid, government offices, a European Union satellite company, and the US Embassy.
