Macron hosted Zhang, who came to the capital Paris to attend the international AI Action Summit, at the Elysee Palace.

In a statement regarding the meeting from the Elysee Palace, it was reported that the two politicians expressed their countries' desire to take on a more active role in the global governance of artificial intelligence.

The statement noted that the two politicians touched upon the desire to develop the potential of this technology and the necessity of bringing the risks it poses under control.

Furthermore, the statement mentioned that Macron said he is determined to maintain an open dialogue between the European Union (EU) and China on trade issues, and included the phrase, "Competition rules must be fair for our firms."

It was reported that during the meeting, Macron requested that China lift measures targeting the EU's cognac sector.
