France calls for UN Security Council reform

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Barrot delivered an important speech at the UN Summit of the Future, which was held ahead of the UN General Assembly and attended by approximately 130 heads of state and government. Stating that the main agenda item of the summit was the renewal of international organizations, Barrot emphasized that many states are demanding reform of the international system based on the UN Charter and sustainable development.

While expressing that global governance must be more representative and collectively more effective, Barrot used the phrase, "It is a system that must now be reformed." He specifically advocated for increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and strengthening the representation of Africa.

Touching upon the Russia-Ukraine War and tensions in the Middle East in his speech, Barrot stated that many civilians have lost their lives in Israel's attacks on Lebanon and emphasized that these attacks "must stop immediately." Stating that France will continue its efforts to resolve crises affecting the international order, including in Lebanon, Barrot reiterated his call for the parties and their supporters in the Middle East conflict to avoid further escalation.

Minister Barrot also expressed the request for an emergency meeting of the UNSC regarding Lebanon, and stated that they will continue to push for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. He also noted that they will continue to "resolutely" condemn Russia's attacks on Ukraine.
