France to deploy troops to 'on the brink of revolt' colony: Protests continue

The French government will send special units to its Caribbean colony of Martinique, where the public has begun organizing protest marches due to the high cost of living.

According to reports in the national press, the Republican Security Companies (CRS) of the French National Police arrived in Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, yesterday.

More than 30 people have been detained in demonstrations against the cost of living on the island since the beginning of September.

Despite the prefecture's ban on gatherings, peaceful protests against the cost of living continued over the weekend.

In Martinique, where food prices are 40 percent higher than in mainland France, the prefecture had banned demonstrations and gatherings in public spaces in the cities of Fort-de-France, Le Lamentin, Ducos, and Le Robert.

Additionally, a nighttime curfew was imposed in certain neighborhoods of the cities of Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin.
