French MP calls for cancellation of 2024 Eurovision
Thomas Portes, an opposition MP in France known for his support for Palestine, has called for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest to be cancelled this year, arguing that it should not serve as a political platform for a state that uses its military to massacre civilians.
La France Insoumise (LFI) MP Portes emphasized in a post on X that singer Eden Golan, Israel's representative at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, which holds its final this evening, represents a country committing "genocide."
Portes, known for his support for Palestine, stated, "Eurovision should not be a media and political platform for a state that uses its army to carry out ethnic cleansing and massacre thousands of civilians," calling for this year's Eurovision Song Contest to be cancelled.
Alessandra, the 2023 Norwegian representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, had previously announced her withdrawal from presenting her country's votes in tonight's final, expressing her support for Palestine.
The city of Malmö, where the contest is being held, is witnessing pro-Palestine demonstrations as the event remains the focus of protests and criticism due to Israel's participation.
Artists representing Belgium, Portugal, the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania, Finland, and San Marino in the Eurovision Song Contest had previously called for an "immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza."
