French Prime Minister Barnier resigns

For the first time since 1962 during the Fifth Republic era in France, a government has fallen after failing to receive a vote of confidence from parliament.

The center-right minority government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, from the Republicans party, who was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron following the early general elections that concluded on July 7, failed to reach a consensus with the opposition regarding the 2025 budget and the health insurance budget. Consequently, a motion of no confidence was accepted yesterday evening with the support of 331 deputies in the National Assembly.

Thus, for the first time since 1962 in the country's Fifth Republic era, a government has fallen after failing to secure the opposition's vote of confidence. The Barnier government, having served for only 90 days, became the shortest-lived government in France during the Fifth Republic era.
