Fritz Belizaire becomes the new Prime Minister of Haiti

The Transitional Presidential Council, which gathered at the National Palace in the capital Port-au-Prince, has appointed former Sports Minister Fritz Belizaire as the country's new prime minister.

Members of the Transitional Presidential Council attended the swearing-in ceremony held for Belizaire's premiership.

In a statement issued by officials, it was noted that members of the Transitional Presidential Council held a comprehensive meeting with the participation of the National Police and the Armed Forces to restore public security in the country.

Elections must be held no later than February 7, 2026, for a new head of state to be elected by the public.

ON THE BRINK OF ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Americas, is on the brink of economic collapse due to a spiral of violence caused by gangs and a power vacuum.

Struggling for many years with fundamental problems such as political, economic, and security crises, Haiti's population of over 11 million is facing the threat of famine.

Following the assassination of Haiti's 53-year-old President Jovenel Moise in an attack by armed individuals at his home on July 7, 2021, presidential elections could not be held in the country due to a "security crisis."
