Allegations of destruction and torture at Deir ez-Zor Prison: Inhumane conditions

It is alleged that thousands of people, including women and children, were condemned for years to a dark world in the Deir ez-Zor Central Prison.

AA correspondents entered the Deir ez-Zor Central Prison and documented the conditions inside.

"DESTRUCTION, DARKNESS, AND DEATH"

A writing on the outer wall of the Deir ez-Zor Central Prison, once one of the largest centers under the regime's Ministry of Interior, beginning with "Destruction, darkness, and death" reveals the spirit of this center.

The prison, where symbols of the regime are encountered in every corner, is seen to have turned into a dump.

In the prison, which has rotten police vehicles in its courtyard, burnt bunk beds, soot-covered walls, and cells and wards turned into dumps draw attention.

The images also reflect that many people whose fates are unknown carved their names into the walls of the cells and wards.

DETAINEES RELEASED

Following the collapse of the Assad regime on December 8, those held in the Deir ez-Zor Central Prison were released.

"THEY MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE"

Basil Kuveyhi, who was held in the Deir ez-Zor Central Prison for 88 days, said in a statement that he was released with the collapse of the regime.

Stating that they were subjected to very bad treatment, Kuveyhi said, "Until the last day, internal security forces raided and beat us, and used tear gas. They used unspeakable language toward us. They even dragged people with leg injuries through the corridors. They did not even show respect to the elderly. They kept us in a prostrate position for 5 hours. They forbade us from going to the toilets for hours. They wounded people by opening fire on them."

Kuveyhi said, "All elements of the regime must be held accountable. Not just the top names, but everyone who mistreated people must be held to account."
