Artemis missions delayed: NASA announces return to the Moon in 2027

Under the Artemis program, a crewed landing on the Moon's South Pole is targeted. However, delays in critical equipment such as spacesuits and heat shields have caused the mission to be postponed until mid-2027.

The Artemis II mission has also been delayed to April 2026 due to technical issues. The charring issue experienced on the Orion spacecraft's heat shield was cited as the main reason for this delay.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated regarding the postponement decision, 'Artemis will be the most challenging and international collaboration-requiring project in human history.'

To adapt to the Moon's extreme temperature conditions, researchers at the University of North Dakota were working on space boot prototypes that combine thermal protection and mobility.

In a statement from NASA, it was expressed that the safety efforts aim to enable astronauts to perform tasks in temperatures dropping as low as -223 degrees.

ARTEMIS 2 MISSION ALSO DELAYED TO 2026

The Artemis 3 mission, which will be the first crewed flight before the return to the Moon, has also been delayed.

NASA stated that unexpected wear was detected on the Orion spacecraft's heat shield during the uncrewed Artemis 1 test flight, and that this situation required detailed examination.

NASA noted that despite the postponement, it aims for the Artemis missions to be completed in the best possible way in terms of safety and technical aspects.

Announcements regarding NASA's new mission schedule will be made in the coming periods. It is alleged that the agency may collaborate with billionaire Elon Musk's company, SpaceX, on future missions.

Reports in the US press suggested that the Trump administration could assign Musk an active role in space exploration.
