Paris streets in turmoil: Police use tear gas against anti-far-right protesters

In France, which is heading toward early general elections, the New Popular Front has become the alliance with the highest number of seats in the National Assembly, according to preliminary results.

Demonstrators gathered at the Place de la République in Paris against the far-right celebrated the left-wing alliance emerging as the winner of the election.

Carrying French and Palestinian flags, protesters held banners reading "The Far-Right Shall Not Pass from Paris to Gaza," "No Place for Fascists in Our Neighborhoods," and "Revolution," while chanting slogans against the far-right National Rally (RN) and fascism.

While the demonstration began in a festive atmosphere, tensions between police and protesters escalated as the hours passed.

Some protesters set fire to items such as bicycles and threw fireworks and various objects at the police.

Police chased the protesters to disperse them and intervened with pepper spray.

Firefighting crews arrived at the scene and extinguished the burning bicycles in the middle of the street.
