Gang whose leader was killed by police spreads terror

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, gang members spread terror. Following the killing of gang leader Matheus da Silva Rezende, nicknamed "Faustao," by police, gang members retaliated by setting fire to more than 35 buses, trains, and 4 trucks in various parts of the city.

PROMISE OF A "TOUGH FIGHT"

Speaking after the largest attacks in Brazilian history, Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro described the attacks as "acts of terrorism" and promised that they would retaliate against the perpetrators.

Governor Castro stated that 12 criminals had been arrested in connection with the attacks, adding, "I have no doubt that tomorrow will be calmer and more orderly."

Governor Castro promised to wage a 24/7 "tough fight" against such criminals, warning them not to dare challenge the state.

SHOT DURING OPERATION

Following the attacks, 45 schools were closed for security reasons. Municipalities warned citizens to stay away from the affected areas. It was reported that the attacks took place in the regions of Cosmos, Campo Grande, Inhoaiba, Guaratiba, Madureira, Paciência, Santa Cruz, Sepetiba, and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, where at least 1 million people live.

The violence began hours after the shooting of 24-year-old Rezende, nicknamed "Faustao," who was allegedly the nephew of Luis Antonio da Silva Braga, one of the most ruthless paramilitary leaders known as "Zinho."

It was reported that Rezende was shot and killed by police during an operation in the shantytown of Tres Pontes, known as a stronghold for militias.
