George Floyd's killer stabbed in prison
Former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted for the murder of George Floyd—which sparked months of anti-racism protests in the U.S.—has been stabbed and seriously injured in prison.
It has been reported that former police officer Derek Chauvin, who caused the death of Black man George Floyd in the U.S. by pressing his knee onto his neck, was injured following a stabbing attack by another inmate in prison.
An official who requested anonymity spoke to The Associated Press regarding the stabbing of former officer Chauvin, who was responsible for Floyd's death.
U.S. CONFIRMED, BUT DID NOT NAME
The official stated that Chauvin was seriously injured after being stabbed by another inmate at the federal prison in Arizona where he is serving his sentence. A statement from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the stabbing incident but did not mention Chauvin by name.
The statement noted that prison staff intervened to bring the situation under control and that the injured inmate was transported to a hospital for treatment.
THE GEORGE FLOYD INCIDENT
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, 46-year-old Black American George Floyd pleaded for minutes, saying "I can't breathe," while 44-year-old police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee onto his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds during his arrest on suspicion of forgery on May 25, 2020.
Floyd died at a hospital where he was taken by emergency medical teams arriving at the scene; footage of the incident ignited debates in the country regarding police violence against Black people and led to intense protests.
Chauvin, who was accused of causing Floyd's death, was taken into custody 4 days after the incident, tried on charges of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
