Georgia postpones EU membership talks until 2028

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced that Georgia will postpone its European Union membership negotiations until 2028. 

In a statement made in Tbilisi, Kobakhidze stated that Georgia wants to achieve EU membership on its own terms and criticized the EU for presenting the process as a favor. 

Kobakhidze argued that some European politicians are interfering in Georgia's internal affairs and that criticisms regarding the "transparency of foreign influence" law are being used as a tool for pressure.

Georgia will not accept financial aid from the EU during this period.

The European Parliament, meanwhile, stated that there were serious irregularities in the parliamentary elections on October 26 and called for the results to be annulled and for new elections to be held.

Rejecting the opposition's allegations of election fraud, Kobakhidze maintained that the process was fair.

Georgia applied for European Union membership on March 3, 2022, and subsequently received EU candidate status in December 2023.
