German Chancellor Scholz evaluates his call with Putin: 'We will speak again soon'

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made statements to the press in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he traveled to attend the G20 leaders' summit.

Pointing out that his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday was important and detailed, Scholz added that he plans to maintain communication with the Russian leader and speak with him 'again soon'.

Scholz explained the reason for his decision to speak with Putin

Explaining that he decided to call Putin due to his potential contacts with Donald Trump, Scholz said:

"It would not be a good idea for the US President to speak with the Russian President in the near future while the head of government of an important European country does not. There are probably people in Germany who think it is a good idea, but I am not one of them."

The Kremlin press service had announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the first time in two years. The statement noted that Putin reminded that Moscow has never abandoned the dialogue interrupted by representatives of the Kiev regime and is ready to resume it, but that any agreements regarding Ukraine must take into account Russia's interests and the realities on the ground.
