German Defense Ministry: We have deployed an advance unit
The German Ministry of Defense has announced that it has deployed an Air Force unit to Belgium, which requested support following increased drone activity in recent days, stating, "An advance unit from the Air Force has been deployed to Belgium to combat drones."
Following Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Denmark, Belgium, which has seen an increase in drone activity over its territory, has requested support from Germany.
In a statement made by the German Ministry of Defense, it was announced that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Chief of Staff Carsten Breuer decided that the German Armed Forces would support Belgium with systems called C-sUAS (Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems) upon Belgium's request.
In this context, it was stated that an advance unit from the German Air Force has arrived in Belgium to assess the situation and coordinate the temporary deployment of drone detection and defense capabilities with the Belgian Armed Forces.
The statement noted that all of the unit's soldiers would be deployed to Belgium very soon, emphasizing that the support operation is seen as a demonstration of close security policy cooperation within the alliance, as well as the mobility of European partners and their solidarity in dealing with hybrid threats.
DRONE ACTIVITY IN BELGIUM HAS INCREASED
In Belgium, drone activity was first detected over the Elsenborn Military Training Camp on October 3, and the Ministry of Defense had launched an investigation into the incident.
On October 25, at least 4 drones were detected over the King Albert Military Base in Marche-en-Famenne in the Walloon region. On the night of November 1 and the evening of November 2, 3 and 4 drones were observed at the Kleine Brogel Air Base, which is used for both national and NATO operations.
Flights were temporarily suspended for security reasons after drones were detected around Brussels Airport on the evening of November 3.
