Germany freezes asylum applications for 50,000 Syrians

Germany has announced that it will not process asylum applications from Syrians until further notice following the recent developments in Syria.

According to media reports, it was stated that due to the uncertain situation in Syria, all currently pending asylum applications from Syrians have been frozen and no new applications will be accepted until further notice.

It was stated that this decision affects 47,270 pending asylum applications, 46,000 of which are initial applications.

In the country, which is heading to elections in February 2025, one of the leading policies of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is to stop accepting more refugees and to repatriate immigrants.

While the rise of the party, which polls show in the 20-30 percent range, continues, some politicians from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany are also expressing views in favor of sending Syrian refugees back to their country.

Politicians from the Greens and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), on the other hand, are calling for caution in the face of the uncertain situation in Syria.
