Glaciers melted, the border between two countries changed: The map will be reshaped

The border between Italy and Switzerland will be redrawn due to melting glaciers. The two countries have agreed to change the border beneath the Matterhorn, one of the highest peaks in the Alps. The Swiss government stated, "The melting of glaciers is causing the evolution of natural elements and redefining national borders."

Switzerland, which officially approved the regulation today, reported that the approval process in Italy is ongoing. It was announced that once both parties complete the signing process, the agreement will be shared with the public and the details of the new border will be disclosed. 

SECOND LARGEST ANNUAL DECLINE RECORDED

Europe, as the world's fastest-warming continent, is experiencing a major shift in terms of the effects on its glaciers. Glaciers in Switzerland lost 4 percent of their volume last year, marking the second-largest annual decline on record.

In 2022, glacier loss in the country had reached its highest level at 6 percent. Additionally, the remains of a German mountaineer who went missing near the Matterhorn about 40 years ago were found within the melting ice last year. In 2022, 11 people lost their lives as a result of a glacier collapse in the Italian Alps.
