Good news for immigrants from Biden: They will be able to obtain citizenship
Senior officials from the Biden administration stated in a meeting with journalists on Monday that, with a program to be announced on Tuesday, they will offer a path to citizenship for an estimated 500,000 spouses and 50,000 children who have been living in the U.S. for at least 10 years.
U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to announce a new program on Tuesday that offers a path to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally and are married to U.S. citizens.
According to a report in Cumhuriyet, officials involved in Biden's campaign stated that with the program, which will be implemented in the coming months, approximately 500,000 people who are spouses of a U.S. citizen and approximately 50,000 children will become eligible as of June 18. It was also reported that the majority of those who will benefit from this right are Mexican.
THEY WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY FOR CITIZENSHIP
The program will eliminate family separations by allowing spouses and children to apply for permanent residency without having to leave the U.S. Ultimately, eligible individuals will be able to apply for U.S. citizenship.
Biden is expected to make this announcement at an event to be held at the White House on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
INITIATED DURING THE OBAMA ERA
The DACA program was launched in 2012 by former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Biden, and it currently prevents the deportation of 528,000 people who were brought to the U.S. as children and provides them with work permits.
In the U.S. elections, candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump are facing off with their policy promises regarding illegal immigration. While record numbers of migrant arrests have occurred at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months, Biden's stance on this issue has hardened significantly.
Earlier this month, Biden banned illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border from seeking asylum, with an asylum ban similar to the one during the Trump era.
This legalization program that Biden plans for the spouses of U.S. citizens could distinguish him from Trump, who has long maintained a hardline stance on both legal and illegal immigration, by reinforcing Biden's message that he supports a more humane immigration system.
