Google gives its AI a 'visual' boost
Google has announced that its Gemini chatbot application now allows for the editing of both AI-generated images and images uploaded from phones or computers.
This built-in (in-app) image editing feature, integrated into Gemini, has begun rolling out gradually starting today. In the coming weeks, this feature will become available in most countries and will support more than 45 languages.
According to a report by Webtekno, the new update is a continuation of the AI image editing model that Google tested on its platform called AI Studio in March.
At that time, these tools made headlines for their ability to remove watermarks from any image. Now, this new editing tool in Gemini, much like the editing tool recently introduced by ChatGPT, has the potential to offer much more successful results compared to standalone AI image generators.
The new Gemini feature has emerged as a multi-step editing process that can process images and text together in every prompt. Google stated that with this feature, it offers "richer and more context-aware" responses. Users can now change the backgrounds of images, replace objects with other elements, add new details, and do much more with ease.
Google shared the following examples: “For instance, it is possible to upload a personal photo and ask Gemini to generate an image showing how you would look with different hair colors. Or, you could have it draft a bedtime story about dragons and generate images to accompany that story.”
If these examples mentioned by Google sound like they might evoke the risk of deepfakes (the production of fake images or videos), the company also made a statement on this matter. It stated that it places an invisible watermark on all images created or edited with Gemini. It also announced that it has begun testing the use of visible watermarks on all Gemini-generated images.
