Government falls in France
Prime Minister François Bayrou's government has fallen after failing to secure a vote of confidence in the French National Assembly.
The French Parliament has dismissed Prime Minister François Bayrou's government after he made a surprise call for a vote of confidence to resolve the months-long deadlock over his fiscal tightening budget.
The French Parliament has brought down Prime Minister François Bayrou's government in a vote of confidence.
While Bayrou is expected to submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday morning, this development is said to have plunged France into a new political crisis.
With the start of the vote of confidence, speeches by opposition parties harshly criticizing the austerity budget proposed by Bayrou provided a strong signal that the prime minister would fall.
Mathilde Panot of the France Unbowed party stated that Bayrou's likely fall was a 'relief' for millions of French people and called for Macron to resign and pave the way for new presidential elections.
Former centrist Prime Minister Gabriel Attal stated that the National Assembly must find a common solution to the problems France is facing and called for dialogue. On the other hand, Marine Le Pen pressured Macron to dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections, emphasizing that change can no longer wait.
Economist Nicolas Veron drew attention to the seriousness of the political crisis, stating that there is no financial instability in the current situation and that the fiscal crisis concern frequently voiced by Bayrou is exaggerated.
