Government falls in Portugal after failing to secure vote of confidence

The minority government led by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in Portugal has fallen after failing to secure a vote of confidence in a parliamentary vote. While the results of the vote in parliament have not yet been shared, Parliament Speaker Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco announced that the center-right government led by Montenegro had lost the vote.

With the result of the vote of confidence, the public in the European Union country of Portugal will head to the polls for general elections for the third time in the last three years.

The minority government, consisting of a two-party alliance led by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), held 80 seats in the 230-seat parliament. The vast majority of opposition lawmakers had announced before the vote of confidence held this evening that they would vote against the government.

Portuguese Prime Minister Montenegro had submitted a motion for a vote of confidence to parliament on Thursday in order to overcome the political crisis in the country, following corruption allegations and calls for his resignation.

The vote of confidence in parliament was held just weeks before Montenegro was set to complete his first year in office.

FAMILY COMPANY ALLEGATIONS

The opposition had alleged that the consulting firm founded by Montenegro, which is currently managed by his sons, had entered into contracts with many private companies, including casinos and hotel businesses, and that Montenegro had benefited from these agreements. Prime Minister Montenegro, however, had denied allegations of any conflict of interest arising from his position as prime minister or any moral wrongdoing regarding the activities of his family company.

EARLY ELECTIONS MAY BE HELD IN MAY

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated in an announcement last week that if the government failed to secure a vote of confidence in parliament, early elections could be held on May 11 or 18. The next regular general elections in the country were scheduled for January 2028.
