Government falls in Romania

The government in Romania has lost its mandate following a vote in parliament. The motion of no confidence was passed with the votes of 281 deputies.

PASSED WITH 281 VOTES

In the vote held in the 464-seat parliament, 281 deputies voted "yes" to the motion. The motion was submitted by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). The ruling National Liberal Party (PNL) and its ally, the Save Romania Union (USR), attended the session but did not cast a vote.

The fact that the Social Democratic Party, which left the government last month, acted together with the far-right this time has sparked debate in the country. It is assessed that this situation could increase the influence of the far-right.

Following the vote, AUR leader George Simion stated, "Today, the voice of the people was heard," and called for "national consensus."

With this result, the pro-EU coalition government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has lost the confidence of parliament.

Following the fall of the government, a new government is expected to be formed in Romania.
