Green Party co-chairs resign: 'We need a new beginning'

It has been reported that the Green Party, a partner in Germany's governing coalition, has decided that its leadership will resign en masse following poor results in state parliamentary elections in the country's east. Green Party co-chairs Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang announced this decision at a press conference in Berlin.

Highlighting the crisis the party is facing, Lang said, "New faces are needed to lead the party out of this crisis." It was stated that they would hand over their duties at the party congress to be held in Wiesbaden in November. Lang stated, "Now is not the time to cling to one's seat. It is time to take responsibility, and we are taking that responsibility by enabling a fresh start."

Co-chair Nouripour also noted that the leadership had been engaged in an intense debate over whether a change was needed within the party. "We have come to the conclusion that we need a fresh start," said Nouripour, adding that the elections in the east showed that the party is in a deep crisis.

The Green Party suffered losses in the elections held this month in the eastern German states of Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg. The party failed to pass the 5 percent threshold in Thuringia and Brandenburg, missing out on seats in the state parliaments, while it managed to enter the parliament in Saxony by a narrow margin with 5.1 percent of the vote.

The Green Party is part of a federal coalition government in Germany alongside the Social Democratic Party (SPD), led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). It is stated that the general assembly to be held to determine the new leadership will be of critical importance for the party's future.
