Greenland crisis: Trump threatens allied countries with tariffs

Donald Trump’s threat of customs tariffs against countries opposing the U.S. attempt to incorporate Greenland is escalating tensions on the international stage. The presence of NATO allies on the island, who have deployed troops to the region, has once again drawn attention to the Arctic.

European troops, gathered for a military exercise, have begun deploying in Greenland. Following this development, Trump initiated a new wave of crisis in transatlantic relations, stating that he would not hesitate to use force if necessary, alongside import restrictions.

According to the Trump administration, control of Greenland is emphasized as being of vital importance to U.S. national security. The President's special envoy, Jeff Landry, expressed Washington's determination to take this step in a statement regarding the matter. Landry announced that he plans to visit Greenland in March and that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance are taking responsibility for coordinating the process. "I believe that when this process is complete, there is an agreement that needs to be made and will be made," he said.

While U.S. interest and pressure regarding Greenland continue, significant meetings have also taken place in the capital, Copenhagen. An 11-member American delegation, consisting of both Republican and Democratic senators, met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to deliver a message of solidarity.

Senator Chris Coons said, "We thank Denmark for being a good and reliable ally and partner for 225 years," and stated that they wish for the dialogue to continue. Coons emphasized that the political debates in the U.S. do not reflect the reality.

Senator Lisa Murkowski also pointed out that most Americans do not want the annexation of Greenland, stating that the island should be viewed as an ally and not as a commercial asset.
