Greta Thunberg recounts her experience in an Israeli prison
Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has revealed that she was subjected to torture and death threats while being held in detention in Israel.
Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was stopped by the Israeli military while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Thunberg described the hardships she faced in an Israeli prison to the Swedish press.
Thunberg stated that she was denied water and subjected to verbal abuse and physical violence during her time in detention in Israel. "They laid me on the ground and tied an Israeli flag between my hands. When I touched the flag, I was kicked in the back and threatened with being killed by poisonous gas," she said.
Stating that Israeli officials wrote insulting messages on her suitcase, Thunberg said, "When I received my suitcase, it had 'Whore Greta' written on it along with inappropriate drawings. This is childish behavior," she expressed.
Thunberg criticized the Swedish government, stating that it did not support her, and said, "Israel stopped us in international waters, but our government remained silent. While Swedes taking aid to Ukraine are praised, our situation was ignored," she said.
The Global Sumud Flotilla set out to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and approached Gazan waters on October 1. The Israeli military intervened in the flotilla, seized 42 ships, and detained hundreds of activists, transferring them to Ketziot Prison. This flotilla is known as the largest fleet to have set out to deliver aid to Gaza to date.
