Hamas responds to claims of a new leader

Hamas has announced that reports claiming a new president has been elected to replace Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was allegedly assassinated in the Iranian capital of Tehran, are untrue.

Hamas Political Bureau member Izzat al-Rishq stated in a post on the social media platform Telegram, "The reports circulating in some media and social media platforms regarding the appointment of specific names to the leadership of the movement are not true."

Al-Rishq noted that the results of the ongoing consultations regarding the appointment of the new head of the movement's political bureau will be announced once they are finalized.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In recent days, reports had begun to appear in the press and on social media platforms claiming that a new leader had been brought in to head Hamas's political bureau to replace Haniyeh.

On August 3, Hamas announced that it had begun consultations to determine the new name to replace the assassinated Political Bureau Chief Haniyeh.

Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, the capital of Iran, on July 31.
