Hamas issues statement regarding Spanish and Belgian leaders

Hamas evaluated the statements made by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo during their visits to Israel, Palestine, and Egypt.

In a written statement, Hamas said, "We appreciate the clear and courageous stance of the Belgian Prime Minister, who confirmed his rejection of the destruction of Gaza and the killing of civilians, and the Spanish Prime Minister, who condemned the indiscriminate murders committed by the occupying state against civilians in the Gaza Strip."

Hamas called on all countries of the world to support "the right of Palestinians to self-determination and to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital."

The statements made by Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez and Belgian Prime Minister De Croo at a joint press conference held yesterday at the Rafah Border Crossing had drawn a reaction from the Israeli side.

Belgian Prime Minister De Croo stated that Israel must comply with international humanitarian law, saying, "The killing of civilians must stop now. Too many people have died. The destruction of Gaza is unacceptable. We cannot accept the destruction of a society."

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez also said, "It is time for the international community and the European Union to recognize the Palestinian state. We must do this together with the EU. However, if the EU does not recognize the Palestinian state, Spain will make its own decision."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen reacted to the statements of the Spanish and Belgian leaders, and the ambassadors of both countries in Israel were summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be issued a formal reprimand.
