'Hazardous material' alert at the Pentagon

A hazardous material scare occurred at the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon).

Following the detection of an air quality issue in the Pentagon building, security protocols were activated due to suspected hazardous materials.

According to a report by the U.S. broadcaster CNN International, citing two sources, some sections in corridors 4 through 7, located between the 2nd and 5th floors of the building, were placed under lockdown.

Eyewitnesses reported that emergency response teams were wearing gas masks and chemical protective suits.

A message sent by the Pentagon's security team stated that additional tests were needed to determine the source of the issue.

"Response teams are on standby to assist those in the building"

Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement, "The Pentagon has advanced systems to ensure the safety of the building and the people inside. These systems detected an air quality issue that requires precautionary measures until its significance can be determined. The Department is implementing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order in the affected area. Response teams are on standby to assist those in the building."
