He caused the death of a police officer during protests in Iran: Revolutionary Court has reached its verdict
24-year-old Mohammad Ghobadlou, who was on trial for 'killing a police officer' during the Mahsa Amini protests in Iran, has been executed.
In Iran, the trial of 23-year-old activist Mohammad Ghobadlou, who was accused of causing the death of a security officer and injuring five others during the protests that erupted in 2022, has concluded.
HE WAS BEING TRIED FOR 'MURDER'
According to state media reports, Mohammad Ghobadlou was being tried for 'murder' on charges of killing a police officer with his car and injuring five others during a rally held in the town of Parand, near the capital Tehran.
The Mizan Agency, the media outlet for the country's religious judiciary, stated in its report: "The death sentence handed down to Mohammad Ghobadlou for the intentional murder of Farid Karampour Hasanvand was carried out this morning following a 487-day judicial process."
The report added, "Following the Supreme Court's confirmation of the verdict, the death sentence against the defendant Mohammad Ghobadlou was carried out early this morning."
THE TRIAL PROCESS
Following the detention and subsequent death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini by the morality police for allegedly not wearing her headscarf in accordance with Islamic rules, months-long anti-regime protests erupted across the country.
In addition to the death sentence he received for murder, Ghobadlou had also been sentenced to death for the crime of "spreading corruption on earth."
However, Amnesty International reported that Ghobadlou's right to a fair trial was violated and that his bipolar disorder was not taken into account by the Iranian judicial system.
In its statement, Amnesty International accused the Tehran administration, stating, "Ghobadlou received two death sentences following grossly unfair and sham trials marred by 'confessions' obtained under torture and the failure to conduct rigorous mental health assessments despite his mental disability."
