He stole the shoes from 'The Wizard of Oz': Court has reached its verdict
The sentence for 76-year-old Terry Jon Martin, who confessed to stealing the shoes used in the film 'The Wizard of Oz' from the museum where they were displayed, has been announced. The U.S. Attorney's Office decided at the hearing held yesterday that Martin must pay a $23,500 fine to the Judy Garland Museum.
The iconic red shoes worn by Judy Garland in the film 'The Wizard of Oz' were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum, where they were on display, in 2005, and the FBI announced that it had recovered the shoes during an operation in 2018.
In the trial held in October 2023, the thief Terry Jon Martin pleaded guilty, but the court decided not to sentence Martin to prison due to his poor health and adjourned the case.
The U.S. Attorney's Office decided at the hearing held yesterday that, taking into account Martin's health conditions, he would be given 1 year of supervised release and must pay a $23,500 fine to the Judy Garland Museum, where the shoes were displayed.
