The extreme heatwave affecting France continues to have fatal consequences for those entering the water to cool off. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that the number of people who have lost their lives by drowning since June 18 has risen to 74.

Speaking to the French press, Nunez stated that a significant portion of the fatalities occurred in areas such as rivers, lakes, and ponds where swimming is prohibited or where there are no lifeguards.

The minister also noted that drowning incidents in private swimming pools have led to deaths. Authorities continue to issue warnings against entering unsupervised and risky water areas to cool off during hot weather.
