Herbal drink suspected in Nigeria: 24 people lost their lives, local sales halted

In Ondo state, located in southwestern Nigeria, 24 people have lost their lives after consuming a "herbal drink." Following the incident, a large number of people were rushed to hospitals with suspected poisoning.

According to reports in the Nigerian press, the cases were observed in the towns of Araromi Obu and Odigbo in Ondo state. Health teams and local authorities intervened in the region after individuals who were reported to have consumed the same drink fell ill.

Authorities stated that the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. As a precautionary measure, the sale and consumption of similar locally produced drinks in these towns have been temporarily banned.

Ondo Police Commissioner Felix Ohagwu announced that an investigation into the incident has been launched. Ohagwu stated that they are working in coordination with the state government, the Ministry of Health, and regional health officials.

It was stated that the investigation is focused on determining the contents of the drink and the potential source of the poisoning that led to the deaths.
