Researchers determined the speed of the magma flow in a dike near the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland on November 10, 2023, to be 7,400 cubic meters per second.
According to a report by New Scientist, Freysteinn Sigmundsson, a researcher at Reykjavik University in Iceland, stated, "In very violent eruptions, the flow rate can be even higher. However, I had not seen such a rapid magma flow into a surface fissure before."
"IT WAS 100 TIMES FASTER"
According to calculations by Sigmundsson and his team, the magma flow in November was approximately 100 times faster than measurements taken during volcanic eruptions in the Fagradalsfjall region in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Noting that the fissure through which the magma flowed was 8 meters wide, Sigmundsson reported that the flows destroyed several buildings and that magma seeping through underground cracks also damaged civil infrastructure.
The results of the research were published in the journal "Science".
