IAEA: Iran is very close to producing nuclear weapons

The IAEA shared its report on Iran's nuclear activities over the last three months with member states of the Board of Governors. The report stated that as of May 17, Iran's stockpile of 60 percent enriched uranium had reached 408.6 kilograms, up from 274.8 kilograms in February.

The report pointed out that 60 percent enrichment is very close to the 90 percent level required for nuclear weapon production, emphasizing that approximately 42 kilograms of 60 percent enriched uranium could be used to make an atomic bomb if further enriched.

"THE ONLY COUNTRY WITHOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS"

The report also noted that Iran is the only country to enrich uranium to this level without possessing nuclear weapons, describing this as a "serious cause for concern." The report stated that Tehran has been warned regarding its nuclear program and called upon to cooperate fully with the IAEA.

TOTAL URANIUM STOCKPILE EXCEEDS 9 THOUSAND TONS

The report stated that Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile, including lower levels, has reached 9,247.6 kilograms, noting that this amount has increased by 953.2 kilograms since February.

NUCLEAR ACTIVITY AT THREE UNDECLARED SITES

The report stated that it has been concluded that Iran conducted activities using undeclared nuclear materials at three sites that it had not previously reported: Lavisan-Shian, Varamin, and Turquzabad. The agency noted that Iran has failed to provide credible answers regarding the activities carried out at these facilities and has sanitized the inspected areas.

The report stated that evidence was found indicating that nuclear material of unknown origin or contaminated equipment was kept at Turquzabad until 2018; however, it also emphasized that the agency has not reached any credible findings regarding a structured and clandestine nuclear weapons program currently underway in Iran.
