Iceland to elect its new President!

Iceland is choosing its new leader. In the Nordic country, 266 thousand 935 voters are heading to the polls today to determine the new president.

In the country, which has a population of 383 thousand 726, the elections began at 09:00 local time and will end at 22:00, with the results expected to be announced in the early hours of tomorrow.

13 CANDIDATES COMPETING

Among the 13 candidates running for president, former Icelandic Prime Minister, 48-year-old Katrin Jakobsdottir, 55-year-old Halla Tomasdottir, who has made a name for herself in the business world, and 43-year-old Halla Hrund Logadottir, who serves as the Director of Energy Affairs at the National Energy Authority of Iceland, are leading in the polls.

Polls released yesterday indicated that former Prime Minister Jakobsdottir is in first place with 26 percent, followed by Tomasdottir with 24 percent and Logadottir with 19 percent. It was noted that Jakobsdottir's handling of the volcanic eruptions that have occurred multiple times on the Reykjanes peninsula since December has received great appreciation in the country.
