Imamoglu obstacle to meeting between Greece and Turkey: 'Recent events have complicated the talks'

Greek Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis made statements regarding the arrest of CHP presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. Marinakis stated that these developments have made it 'difficult for the Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council meeting to take place.'

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis previously addressed Imamoglu's arrest at the EU summit held in Brussels. Mitsotakis claimed that democracy in Turkey is in decline.

The government spokesperson described the recent events in Turkey as 'volatile and concerning,' and stated the following:

'Given these developments, holding the Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council is becoming difficult.'

MITSOTAKIS REACTED

The high-level meeting planned between the two countries was scheduled to take place in April. Mitsotakis and AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were expected to meet at the summit.

Regarding Imamoglu's arrest, Mitsotakis used the following expressions:

'Turkey is, at least on paper, a candidate country for the EU and a country that aspires to establish closer relations with the Union. Frankly, this can only be done within the framework of the European Council's decisions, as we have negotiated in recent years.'
