India to fence Myanmar border

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah announced in a statement that, in line with the federal government's decision, a 1,643-kilometer-long fence will be built along the India-Myanmar border, similar to the one constructed on the border with Bangladesh.

MIGRATION ISSUE

Shah stated that the free movement regime, which grants citizens of both countries living within 16 kilometers of the Myanmar-India border the right to cross the border without a visa, will also be abolished.

N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of India's Manipur state, had requested that the federal government end the free movement regime, pointing to the wave of migration toward India due to internal unrest in Myanmar.

COUP IN MYANMAR

The Myanmar military seized power on February 1, 2021, following allegations of fraud in the 2020 general elections and rising political tension in the country.

The army detained many officials and ruling party leaders, including the country's de facto leader and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi, and declared a one-year state of emergency.

As a result of the Myanmar military's armed intervention against anti-coup protesters and insurgent groups, 902 people have lost their lives to date, and thousands of demonstrators have been detained.

Meanwhile, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, approximately 1,400 people have lost their lives and 10,000 people have been detained in the country since the coup.

Widespread protests and the trials of high-level government officials in military courts continue in the country.
