Investigation launched into prosecutor of Trump cases in the US
In the US, former Special Counsel Jack Smith is under investigation over allegations of engaging in illegal political activities during his probe into Donald Trump.
The US Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal agency, has confirmed the investigation launched into Jack Smith. Smith was appointed by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to lead the investigation into Trump.
Smith is accused of violating the Hatch Act, a federal law that prohibits public employees from engaging in certain political activities. Smith had filed two federal cases against Trump ahead of the November 2024 presidential election, but these cases were withdrawn following Trump's reelection.
While the Republican Party claims that Smith targeted Trump for political reasons, Democrats argue that Smith is being investigated by the Trump administration for political motives.
