Iran condemns Ukraine following ship attack in the Caspian Sea

Following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's announcement that Ukrainian forces had conducted an operation targeting Russian and Iranian-linked assets in the Caspian Sea, a sharp reaction has come from Iran.

Zelenskyy stated that the attacks targeted a Russian warship as well as vessels reported to be transporting military equipment and cargo from Iran to Russia.

In a written statement, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs "strongly" condemned the attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea. The statement reported that the attack caused an explosion on the ship, resulting in the death of one sailor and leaving one person injured.

The Tehran administration argued that the act in question was a clear violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter. The ministry stated that the attack carries the risk of expanding and fueling the war in the region.

The Iranian statement also emphasized that the attack in the Caspian Sea was openly claimed by the Ukrainian President, asserting that this is an indication of the Kyiv administration's "hostile" stance toward Iran.
