Iran elects its president
The second round of presidential elections has begun in Iran. Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, who cast his vote in the capital Tehran, pointed to the turnout in the first round and said, "I heard that the public's interest in the elections is greater than before. That is encouraging."
InIran, Ebrahim Raisi's death in a helicopter crash has led to the start of the voting process for the second round of the presidential election, the first round of which was held on Friday, June 28.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidiannounced that the voting process had begun during a press conference held in the capital, Tehran. In the election, the reformist candidate who finished first in the initial round, Tabriz MP and former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian is competing against the conservative candidate and former secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili .
According to Anadolu Agency, Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khameneicast his vote at a ballot box set up in the Imam Khomeini Hosseiniyeh in the capital, Tehran, where he holds his official receptions. As he did in the first round of the election, Khamenei called on voters to head to the polls. Speaking to the press after casting his vote, Khamenei said, "I have heard that the public's interest in the elections is greater than before (the first round). If so, that is gratifying." In his statement, Khamenei added, "Tomorrow we will see our new president. God willing, our people will vote and choose the best one."
