Iran: Most of the planned route in the Strait of Hormuz will pass through Iranian territorial waters

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made a statement regarding the agreement reached between Oman and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iran's official news agency IRNA, Gharibabadi stated that Tehran is working on a "new model" for the management of maritime traffic in the strait as part of the agreement.

Stating that the majority of the planned maritime route will pass through Iranian territorial waters, with some sections passing through Omani territorial waters, Gharibabadi indicated that the northern route passing near Larak Island and the southern route off the coast of Oman will be closed.

Gharibabadi noted that the new route is expected to be used for a period of 2 to 4 months or longer.

The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister also made statements regarding the US's obligations in the negotiation process. Stating that they do not trust the Washington administration, Gharibabadi accused the US of "repeatedly violating" its commitments in the memorandum of understanding signed between the parties.

Gharibabadi also said that the US returning to its obligations under the memorandum signed in June is a necessary condition for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, but that it would not be sufficient on its own.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei had previously stated that Iran and Oman had reached an agreement on the geographical features of the planned route and that the parties could soon issue a joint statement if no "third party interferes."
