Iran reacts to UN resolution, calls it 'overreach'

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reacted to the UN Security Council resolution calling for Iran to immediately halt its attacks on Gulf countries. In a statement on his social media account, Baghaei said, "The UN resolution adopted yesterday regarding Iran is an overreach and is completely contrary to the law. Nothing can negate a nation's inherent right to legitimate self-defense."

"Principles of the UN Charter are being distorted"

Stating that the resolution is contrary to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, Baghaei said, "This resolution distorts the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law. At the same time, the fact that the US has turned the Council into a tool for its own unlawful interests shows how much the UN Security Council system has weakened."

"The Council chose to condemn Iran"

Arguing that the Council should have clearly and strongly condemned the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran, Baghaei said, "However, the Council chose to condemn Iran instead. The drafters of the resolution knowingly ignored the fact that Iran was defending itself against the unprovoked aggression of two bully regimes, one of which is a permanent member of the Council."

Warning to Gulf countries regarding bases

Baghaei further stated, "No country should provide any assistance to the illegal war waged by the US and Israel against Iran. It is impossible for this ongoing aggression against Iran to be carried out without the use of US military bases and military facilities deployed on the territories of countries in the Persian Gulf."

UNSC resolution condemning Iran had been adopted

Tensions in the region had escalated rapidly following the attacks launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. The Tehran administration had targeted some Gulf countries with ballistic missiles, stating that they had supported the US and Israel in these attacks and allowed their military bases to be used. Following these developments, the issue was brought to the agenda of the United Nations Security Council. The draft resolution, prepared under the leadership of Bahrain and submitted on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states and Jordan, demanded that Iran's missile attacks on Gulf countries be condemned and that these attacks be halted. The resolution also stated that Iran was endangering maritime security and international freedom of navigation by closing the Strait of Hormuz. In the vote held at the Council, 13 countries supported the draft, while China and Russia abstained. On the other hand, a draft resolution by Russia, which called for the cessation of all conflicts in the Middle East without naming any specific country, failed to find sufficient support in the Council and was rejected with 4 votes in favor, 2 against, and 9 abstentions.
