The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the UK Ambassador to Tehran following the British government's accusation that the Tehran administration was involved in a suspected attack plot against the RAF Fairford air base.
In a statement from the ministry, London was asked to present evidence supporting its accusations without delay. The statement included the following: "The UK government must present the documents and evidence supporting the accusations it has leveled against Iran regarding the incident in question as soon as possible. Otherwise, Iran will seriously reconsider its bilateral relations."
The Royal Air Force's RAF Fairford base, which also hosts the US Air Force in the UK, made headlines following a suspicious incident that occurred on Sunday, September 27. Five individuals in their 20s, who were reported to be traveling toward the base in three vans, were detained in the Gloucestershire countryside on suspicion of "explosives and terrorism offenses."
Two more individuals considered to be linked to the incident were detained on October 1 and October 6, and it was reported that all suspects have been released on bail.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham had pointed to Iran in his latest statement regarding the suspicions of an attack plot. Burnham stated, "Based on our assessment, I can confirm that it is highly likely that the plot was coordinated in Iran and almost certainly directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps."
