Iranian activist Hossein Ronaghi sews his lips shut: Demands release of political prisoners

Iranian activist Hossein Ronaghi has sewn his lips shut to demand the release of "political" prisoners.

In a message shared on his X social media account, Ronaghi stated that he would continue the demands of activist Kianoosh Sanjari, who reportedly died by suicide last week after his demand for the release of "political" prisoners was not met.

Sharing a photo of himself with his lips sewn shut, Ronaghi announced that he would begin a solitary sit-in protest at a corner on Valiasr Street in Tehran.

In his message, Ronaghi stated: "You can arrest or take me away when I come and sit there. Until then, my resistance belongs to me. I will fight for the cause for which Kianoosh gave his life. My lips will remain sealed, but my actions will amplify his message."

It was claimed that activist Kianoosh Sanjari, who had announced he would end his life if "political" prisoners in Iran were not released, died by suicide on November 13. Sanjari had demanded the release of 3 protesters who were sentenced to death during the 2021 protests on charges of murder and disturbing public order.

His relatives later announced that Sanjari had died by suicide after sharing a message stating, "No one should be imprisoned for expressing their opinion. Protesting is the right of every Iranian citizen."

Following the incident, which sparked reactions on social media, opposition groups blamed the country's administration.

Mohammad Shahriari, head of the Tehran Criminal Court, stated in a press briefing regarding the matter that the incident was being investigated as a suspicious death and that police were examining security camera footage from the building.

Some activists on social media, however, have alleged that Sanjari may have been killed.

Sanjari's funeral was held on November 15 at the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery in Tehran.
