Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi: More than 5 thousand people killed in attacks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made statements regarding the attacks by the US and Israel on Iran during a press conference he held in New York. Araghchi stated that more than 5 thousand people have lost their lives in the attacks.

According to reports in Iranian media, Araghchi noted that hundreds of women and children are among those who lost their lives. The Iranian minister argued that not only residential areas but also schools, hospitals, energy facilities, sports and cultural complexes, as well as transportation infrastructure, have been targeted.

Araghchi also evaluated the killing of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several high-level political and military officials. Describing these attacks as "clear crimes and violations of international law," Araghchi asserted that these events constitute serious breaches of international law.

The report stated that the US and Israel carried out joint attacks on various cities in Iran, primarily the capital Tehran, on February 28. It was also reported that Iran tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz following the attacks.

Uncertainty continues in the diplomatic process aimed at reducing tension in the region. It was reported that the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 aimed at ending conflicts on all fronts in the region, including Lebanon. While the 60-day negotiation period envisioned for a final agreement ended on August 17, the future of the talks remains unclear due to the recent increase in tension.
