Iranian President Pezeshkian announces condition for normalization in the Strait of Hormuz
In a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a result of attacks by the US and Israel, declaring, "Any foreign intervention in this war under any pretext will lead to dangerous consequences. The return to normalcy depends on the US and Israel stopping their attacks."
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa. During the meeting, the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran, recent developments in the region, and the potential consequences of the war were discussed. Stating that the EU and some European countries have adopted a "negative and biased" stance against the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, Pezeshkian said, "The military attack by the US and the Zionist regime against Iran is not only an unprecedented crime against the Iranian people, but also a clear violation of the rule of law and an attack on all the principles and rules that the European Union claims to protect."
Pezeshkian stated that Iran had entered negotiations with the US with a "sincere and constructive" approach but was attacked for a second time while the negotiations were ongoing, adding that this shows the Washington administration does not believe in diplomacy and only aims to impose its own interests.
"Neighboring countries have not fulfilled their responsibilities"
Emphasizing that Iran has the right to legitimate self-defense, Pezeshkian said, "We respect the sovereignty of neighboring countries; we have no intention of attacking them. However, attacks against Iran are being carried out from US bases located in these countries. The countries in question have not fulfilled their international responsibilities to prevent their territories from being used against Iran."
"Normalization of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the cessation of attacks"
Stating that the current situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is the result of the "aggressive policies" of the US and Israel, Pezeshkian said, "The Strait of Hormuz is closed to the aggressor parties and those who support them. Any foreign intervention in this war under any pretext will lead to dangerous consequences. The return to normalcy depends on the US and Israel stopping their attacks. We have never sought tension or war. We have the necessary will to end this war, provided that the necessary conditions are met and, in particular, that guarantees are given that the attacks will not be repeated."
Criticism and call to the European Union
Criticizing the EU's silence in the face of US and Israeli attacks, Pezeshkian called on European countries, stating, "The European Union's silence in the face of the crimes committed by the US and the Zionists is regrettable and contradicts their human rights claims. European countries should regulate their policies based on international law instead of destructive approaches toward Iran."
"Europe does not support the attack"
During the meeting, Costa emphasized that war and tension in the region must end, expressing his concerns regarding the global political and economic impacts of this conflict. Stating that European countries do not support the attack on Iran and that this situation is contrary to the rules of international law, Costa noted that problems should be solved through negotiation and peaceful means.
