Iraq responds to Turkey's visa liberalization with 'sanction-like' move: 25-fold customs duty on 'those' products

In recent weeks, Turkey lifted the visa requirement for Iraqi citizens over the age of 50 and under the age of 15. Shortly after this decision, the Iraqi government began imposing a customs duty 25 times higher on Turkey's white meat products.

Producing 2.3 million tons of chicken meat last year, Turkey exported 52 percent of this product to Iraq. Iraq was the country to which Turkey exported the most chicken meat.

Speaking to Sözcü TV regarding Iraq's decision, Erdoğan Toprak stated, 'This development will negatively affect white meat production and exports. Many producers will be aggrieved due to export agreements made in advance. The suspension of operations and even the closure of white meat processing facilities could come onto the agenda. Contact must be established with Iraq immediately to have this decision lifted.'
